GOALS

Facilitators:

  • Welcome and introductions
    - Students get familiar with the radio station and are given a tour of 3NOW premises. Students may need to be split up especially for tours.
    - Short intro of Chris Z and why and how I became involved.
  • - We will define 3NOWís role and community radioís role.
    - What we plan to do in the eight weeks.
    - We will define the difference between commercial radio and community radio. We are the voice of our community.
  • Students learn about each other and their interests, music tastes, outline basic goals of program.
  • In a 7 week format, weeks 1 and 2 can merge.

 

Resources: Basic stationery.

Location: North West FM premises.

Homework: Program direction.

Skills: Communication

 

Get some insights into the studentsí tastes (film, music, sport, books, TV) and hobbies.

 

We essentially want to produce a snap shot of what students are listening to and which particular pieces of music have impacted them in a positive way.

 

Discover studentsí experience with radio in general.

Facilitators:

  • Decide structure of program incorporating studentsí interests and music tastes.
    - To produce a program we will need direction, a theme and a plan.
    - The talent will come directly from the students and they will decide the content.
    - The show will be edited externally by someone with previous experience in producing radio content in order to maintain broadcast quality.
    - Chris Z will panel and record all material for editing later.
  • Each student will need to present something on air.
    - The song they choose must be researched and presented on air.
    - They need to collect the music for playback.
    - Each student will go into the studio and Chris Z will record them saying their name and where they are from.

Resources: Mini discs, music.

Location: Either North West FM or school premises.

Homework: Think about music and personal inclusions.

Skills: Team work

 

Get an idea of what music we want to include in the program.

 

Get students actually talking and record them in the studio.

 

Develop confidence in the program and in the students themselves.

Facilitators:

  • Research into content inclusion.
    - Students return to school to use computers and research aids to collect data.
    - They shall then write up a first draft script.
    - Word length can be broad but refined later once other parameters are in place.
  • Choose music
    - We donít want to be rigid at all when selecting music. We can always edit out any bad content.
    - Songs should ideally be between 3.30-4.30 minutes long.

 

Resources: Research aids, computers, music.

Location: School premises.

Homework: Refine direction.

Skills: Literacy

 

Decide what music to play and get an idea of what is to be recorded.

 

Develop content and scripts.

  • Writing and recording.
    - Allocate time to each student.
    - Refine all content for inclusion and recording.
  • Students learn how to talk into the microphone, how to sit etc.
    - We will need students to work in pairs and bring them into the studio as such.
    - While recording inside studio, those who are outside need to practice and refine discussion points and scripts.
  • Students should record drops while others are recording.

 

Resources: Mini discs, music, basic stationery. Portable recorder. Training guides.

Location: North West FM.

Homework: Refine potential script.

Skills: Literacy and communication.

 

Record at least half of the studentsí content.

 

Learn basics of talking and recording content.

  • Writing and recording.
    - Allocate time to each student.
    - Refine all content for inclusion and recording.
    - Program should be at least 1 hour long.
    - Produce first version of the show which will go to air.
  • Students learn how to talk into the microphone, how to sit etc.
    - We will need students to work in pairs and bring them into the studio as such.
    - While recording inside studio, those who are outside need to practice and refine discussion points and scripts.
    - Conduct further research to fill any content holes.
  • Students should record drops while others are recording.

 

Resources: Mini discs, music, basic stationery. Portable recorder. Training guides.

Location: North West FM.

Homework: Listen to material recorded in preparation for final edit.

Skills: Literacy and communication.

 

Record rest of the studentsí content.

 

Learn basics of talking and recording content.

 

Develop confidence levels in students.

  • Put program to air and discuss outcomes of project, assess etc.
    - This week is more of a celebratory event.
    - Maybe get some snacks and pop corn.
    - Have students answer a feedback survey to refine program.

 

Location: North West FM.

Things to remember:

  • Aim to make things interactive and fun
  • When and where will each session be conducted?
  • North West FM will edit the show
  • Who can help from station or elsewhere (additional aid)?
  • Book studio and ascertain whether all necessary equipment is functional.
  • Produce promo ID for show?
