History

The Sports of All Sorts program commenced from a humble beginning in 1994, when Ivor Jenkins, a volunteer presenter at community radio 98.9 North West FM since it commenced full time broadcast in April 1993, was asked to fill a Saturday morning time slot for a one or two week period.

Ivor provided a music format initially but while attending a social function with friends, with whom he had grown up and played sport, suggested that they join him in presenting a sporting program.

Gerard Delaney, Mick Delaney & Kevin Donnelly joined Ivor and became presenters and commentators for the Sports of All Sorts. Mick Delaney was responsible for the program’s name. Jim Calthorpe and Melanie Jones have recently joined the Sports of all Sorts team. Melanie has represented Australia and Victoria in Women's Cricket.

Initially a one hour program, it was extended to two hours, then three hours and currently four hours, following its success and popularity with the listening audience.

The content of the program has always concentrated on local sporting organisations, clubs or individuals. Many of the clubs compete in elite competitions, others in local competitions. Many individuals have represented their club, Victoria and Australia, at the highest levels.

Whether interviewing an elite athlete or a 10 year old member of a local sporting club, the members of the Sports of All Sorts are able to make their guests comfortable in the different surroundings of the radio station, whilst extracting the details of their performances, which are interesting and informative for the listeners. These interviews have been successful in recognizing the achievements of numerous sportspeople, whose notable performances would otherwise go unannounced to the community at large.

Not only have Sports of All Sorts interviewed the decision makers in the North-West area, but they have encouraged the successful performers to speak about their achievements and future expectations. The involvement of parents and office-bearers are acknowledged by the presenters, as well as the performances of the athletes.

Sports of All Sorts has formed strong bonds with many sporting organizations which provide media releases or representatives for on air interviews.

Many of the sporting bodies which have been promoted and encouraged on the Sports of All Sorts, have provided written confirmation of the program's promotion of their sport and clubs which has had a beneficial impact on their organizations.

The standard of the Sports of All Sorts program has been recognized by The Australian Basketball Association, by awarding them the Best Radio Coverage in their South Conference in 1998, their East Conference in 1999, South/East Women's Conference in 2000 and also the National award in 2000, ahead of many commercial radio stations, in both Metropolitan and Country areas.

In June 2005 the Sports of all Sorts received Cricket Victoria’s Best Radio Media Award. The program was highly recommended in an article in the Sunday Age on 16th April 2000 as a "grass roots, community-minded" sports program.

The Leader Newspaper Group featured articles on the Sports of All Sorts in all its north-west newspapers on June 1997 and September 2000.

During the Sports of All Sorts programs, community activities, such as council festivals, school fetes, service organizations’ fund raising or charitable organizations’ appeals are promoted each week.

Various competitions, for prizes supplied by local sponsors of the clubs, have been well supported with entries continually coming in. These competitions are good indicators of the level of interest in the program by the listeners.

The presenters of Sports of All Sorts are always looking to improve the program to better promote local sporting bodies and individuals to the listeners and thus encourage a healthy community participation in the North West.
