98.9 FM Promo Rules

Rules for Program Promos: The script must contain the following information:

1. The name of the program
2. The day it is on air
3. The start and finish time (saying only the start time does not show how long the show is)
4. What the program is about – this is where you have to convince a listener who is listening to someone else’s program that your program is also worth listening to.
5. If the script looks good to you then run with it. If you think it could be improved then run it past one of the members of the Production Group.
6. The end result must be no longer than 30 seconds
7. If you want a music background it must be instrumental only underneath the voice – no singing.
8. You can have singing at the start or end but the whole promo must be no longer than 30 seconds.

If you need assistance with any of this, contact any member of the Production Group and we can arrange a time for you to come in and we can record your promo, edit it and get it ready to go to air.

Rules for Ethnic Promos:

1. The ethnic promo must start in English –
2. Rules 1 – 4 above for program promos still apply.
3. Then the promo should say something similar – in their own language.
4. The promo should end with “98.9 North West FM” – in English
5. The end result must be no longer than 30 seconds

Promo Production quality

1. Use quality recording equipment only. Mobile phone apps are NOT suitable.

If you don’t have a high quality microphone at home, then record it at the station before or after your own show or on a Saturday afternoon when there is a free studio from 2 – 5 pm.

2. Everything you record (voice or music) must be no louder than –1 dB. Anything louder may distort.

• If you record on Audacity, turn on “View/Show Clipping”. This shows a red line if it is too loud.

• If you record on Adobe Audition / Cool Edit keep it between the –1 dB white lines.

3. Everything must be saved as a “wav” file (not mp3) to retain the best quality

• Adobe Audition / Cool Edit – File/Save As – Save as type: Windows PCM (*.wav)

• Audacity – File/Export Audio – Save as type: WAV (Microsoft) signed 16-bit PCM.

4. The end result file needs to be Normalized to –1 dB.
