North West FM conducts regular radio training courses for wannabe presenters at our studios in Hadfield, Melbourne, Australia. Our Training courses are generally run over 4 days on weekends. Our most recent training course started on Sunday, March 17, 2019. If you are interested in our training, there is an application form at the bottom of this page.
Sunday March 17: 9.30 am to 1 pm
Saturday March 23: 9.30 am to 5 pm
Sunday March 24: 9.30 am to 5 pm
Sunday March 31: 9.30 am to 5 pm
Day 1: 9.30 am – 1 pm. Bob Rau covers defamation (the most testing subject we cover) and interviewing. If you have any doubts as to whether you really want to continue – this half day session will help you decide!
Day 2: 9.30 am – 5 pm. You meet Roger Williams and are welcomed officially to the station. You will learn about belonging to North West FM and get to use the on-air microphones plus lots more (the day may end earlier).
Day 3: 9.30 am – 5 pm. Jean Rau covers a wide number of topics relevant to being an on air presenter, and you will get the first part of your Presenter Manual. The station will be a big part of this day. You will also meet other presenters.
Day 4: 9.30 am – 5 pm. Jean and Darren will cover Codes of Practice, Broadcast Law and we check out the studios in detail. We also arrange your Mentoring with an on-air Presenter – this is done in your own time as well as your private practise with the equipment. Mentoring allows you to work with an experienced presenter to get your on-air practice and be checked to make sure your skills are up to standard. Hopefully we complete your training on this day.
It amounts to 3 and a half days in total and is quite a commitment. However, we may get through the information quicker on some days and be able to finish earlier. We usually have a great time as well as learn and share information regarding being involved at North West FM – so we hope you are looking forward to these sessions. You will also have much to contribute. Attendance on all four days is compulsory.
Following the training, you will do mentoring with an on-air presenter to give you further radio experience. The presenter will advise the committee when you have shown that you have all the necessary practical aspects to be able to do your own show.
The course covers:
- – Introduction / Administration
- – Radio Production
